Structural properties of correlated electron systems (Martin von Zimmermann, Germany)

Topics

  • Correlated electron systems are characterized by an intimate interplay of spin, charge, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom. These correlations lead unusual properties like high-Tc superconductivity in cuprate materials or the colossal magneto resistance effect in manganites. It will be shown how x-ray diffraction techniques can be applied to characterize the charge, the orbital and the lattice degrees of freedom. This will be done following three examples, stripe ordering in cuprates, orbital ordering in manganites and charge order in a doped spin chain and ladder compound.
