Organized by the Institute of Experimental Physics,
University of Bialystok

under the auspices
of the Committee of Crystallography, Polish Academy of Sciences

This School is financially supported in part by
the International Union of Crystallography and the European Crystallographic Association

16th International Summer School on Physics and Chemistry of Condensed Matter was held from July 1st to July 10th, 2004 in Bialowieza, Poland.

The Photo Gallery 1, prepared by webmasters Ralf Theissmann and Marian Mazurek and Photo Gallery 2, prepared by Marek Brancewicz and Maria Biernacka are available.

Scope of the School
The School is dedicated to structural properties of solids. Special attention will be paid to:
  • charge and spin density distributions in modern materials, biomaterials in particular
  • structure of proteins and pharmacological compounds
  • solid-state reactions
  • structures of solids with highly correlated electrons
  • solids under high pressure
  • structures in excited states
  • chirality in solids
  • software problems in structure determination
  • modelling solids
The School is known for giving the opportunity to young scientists, undergraduate and PhD students, to learn about present status of important solid-state problems. The teaching staff ensures high tutorial level; the lectures, usually short courses, require only basic knowledge of physics and chemistry of solids. It is important feature of the School that it offers unique possibility for young students from the East and the West to meet one another.
Permanent poster session will be arranged with a goal to allow for presentation of the scientific achievements of PhD students. Because of the organization of the School, only very few papers will be accepted for presentation in oral form. We expect to receive information (title and abstract) on the proposed presentation not later than March 31st, 2004.

Location
International Schools of Condensed Matter Physics till 1997 were traditionally held in Bialowieza, Poland. Since 1998 the Schools were organized in Suprasl. We had returned to roots in the last year, and School 2003 was held in Bialowieza, the place where the Schools originated and developed. The small village Bialowieza lies in the woods called Puszcza Bialowieska, 100 km East from Bialystok. The accommodation in "Bialowieski" hotel consists mainly of double-bed rooms. All rooms are equipped with a shower. Local bus provides service from Bialowieza to Bialystok, a town of 300 thousands in habitants.

Language
The official language of the School is English.

By clicking Provisional Programme you will find list of lectures and the preliminary "time-table" of the School. The latter may change if special requirements from our lecturers appear. The main idea in constructing the programme was to offer as much time for free discussions as possible. Such discussions are always needed for better perception of the lectures which will take place before lunch and around the dinner-time.

Although the School consists mainly of the short courses given by the invited teachers, there will be a small room on 1/2 hour oral presentations for particulary interesting contributions. In general, young scientist, PhD students, can present theirs achievements during permanent poster session only. The poster dimensions shouldn't exceed [1.5m x 1.5m]. However if you need more space, let us know about it as quickly as possible and we shall do our best to satisfy your needs. Current information about the authors and titles of posters to be presented, see PROGRAMME.

Fees
The fee 400 EUR (350 EUR for accompanying persons), covering all local expenses, should be paid before 15th of May, 2004, with a note: "School of Condensed Matter Physics", to the Bank account:

The fee will increase by 60 EUR if paid after 15th of May, 2004.

Single rooms will be available at the extra cost of 100 EUR.

In case of any problems with the bank transfer, please, let us know about it: there is a possibility of paying the fee at the registration desk.

Fellowships
Limited number of Young Scientists Awards will be granted to students and scientists up to 30 years old (occasionally 35 years old). Interested persons may apply by writing directly to us with an information on whether they wish to present any poster, and if so, what would be its title, list of authors, affiliations and short abstract. A letter of support from the supervisor should be either attached or sent independently by the supervisor.

Transport
The current information about connections from Warsaw to Bialystok is available on Website (to be updated). For participants from outside POLAND, who are coming by plane to Warsaw Airport (Okecie) we recommend the bus connection to Bialystok. Please, check the page GETTING HERE.

Although the level of thefts is not much higher than in many other countries, please, be careful and keep all your documents, money and belongings under control.

On Thursday 1th of July, 2004, 16:00 the School bus will take the participants to Bialowieza. The bus will leave from the Institute of Experimental Physics, University of Bialystok, ul. Lipowa 41. On July 10th, the bus transport to Bialystok will be provided by organizers. If you cannot use our bus (especially during the first day of the School) and feell a need of some help from our side, please, don't hesitate and write to us.
