The investigation of specific heat and other thermal properties is part of a fundamental characterisation process which allows to gain insight into the microscopic properties of solids. While the principles of this measurement technique have been well established for a long period of time novel developments are emerging in response to the demands for the investigation of new materials. One such development is the measurement of the specific heat of thin film samples and nanosized entities.
This talk will be an introduction to the experimental techniques and analysis of measurements for which small, dimensionally reduced samples are investigated. Specific heat, thermal conductivity and possibly thermal expansion measurements are described for dimensionally reduced samples. Measurement and analysis techniques are presented and discussed.
