Magnetic Structures of Ferromagnetic or Ferrimagnetic Oxides via Magnetic Compton Scattering
-
Magnetic Compton scattering from ferromagnetic or ferromagnetic compounds determines the spin structure, i.e. the orientation of unpaired electrons and the couplings between different magnetic atomic species or between different atomic shells. Under a scattering condition that validates the impulse approximation, spin-polarized electron momentum density can be obtained from the energy-profiles of scattered x-rays. The interpretation of such data is straightforward and quantitative since the spin-polarized density is given by the difference between majority and minority bands.
This lecture reviews recent works on ferromagnetic or ferromagnetic oxides, i.e. ruthenates, manganites and ilmenates, by magnetic Compton scattering at BL08W, SPring-8, after an introduction to the fundamental physics of these compounds.
